Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The fall semester is in full swing, and I'm anxious to share many exciting developments in the NERS department with you.

First of all, I would like to welcome our new Dean, Alec Gallimore.  I look forward to working closely with him over the coming five years. Dean Gallimore has been a frequent collaborator with NERS faculty member John Foster in the electric/plasma propulsion research area. We also express our deepest gratitude to Dean David Munson for his outstanding leadership over the past decade.

I am also pleased to welcome Dr. Ryan McBride to the NERS department. Dr. McBride has joined the Department as Associate Professor. He previously worked at Sandia National Labs, where he pursued research on magnetized liner inertial fusion (MagLIF). He will continue to pursue his primary research interests in plasma physics, radiation generation, pulsed-power technology, plasma diagnostics, and the dynamics of magnetically driven, cylindrically imploding systems relevant to MagLIF in the NERS Plasma, Pulse Power and Microwave Laboratory. Professor McBride earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2009.

We are also delighted that Dr. Patricia Schuster has been selected for a UM Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship position in NERS. Patricia is a native Michigander, having grown up in Rochester Hills, and NERS alumna (BSE NERS '11). She holds a PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a NSF Graduate Research Fellow. She will continue her research at UM in advanced scintillator materials and nuclear nonproliferation.

NERS student enrollment is very strong with 100 undergraduates (NE and Engineering Physics). Our entering class of 45 graduate students is a record, bringing total graduate enrollment to 129.

Construction is well underway on the new Nuclear Engineering Laboratory, with an expected completion date of mid-March 2017. All four floors have been constructed and walls are going up! We hope that our friends and alumni can return in April 2017 to celebrate and tour the state-of-the art facility, which will house faculty research labs focused on nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear reactor safety, thermal hydraulics and homeland security.

I am pleased and grateful to announce that NERS alumnus Tom Mehlhorn (BS NERS '74, MS '76, PhD '78) and his wife Noelle, also a U-M graduate (BA Speech Pathology and Language '75, MS '76), have made a major donation in support of the NERS department. The Mehlhorns' gift endows a new NERS undergraduate scholarship. Tom has served for a number of years as chair of the NERS External Advisory Board as well as on numerous College of Engineering alumni committees.

Congratulations to Professor Sara Pozzi on being featured in “Celebrating Women in Physics” in this Elsevier Special Issue. This is a select group of scientists and we're thrilled for Professor Pozzi about this international recognition! 

Associate Professor Annalisa Manera was just awarded the Director’s Award from the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light water Reactors (CASL). Professor Manera was recognized for her computational fluid dynamics simulations that led to understanding the deposition of CRUD on nuclear fuel rods.

We are pleased that our new Medical Physics Certificate Program in collaboration with the University of Michigan Radiation Oncology Department has been granted CAMPEP accreditation.

The NERS department taught a class in China for the fifth year. Sixteen students from the UM College of Engineering visited Xiamen University and Shanghai Nuclear Energy Research and Design Institute (SNERDI) for this year’s class. Twenty-three Chinese students also visited UM as part of this program.
