Faculty

The Multidisciplinary Design Program aims to serve faculty as well as students. To faculty members we offer support in identifying and obtaining sponsor funding as well as organizing and training undergraduates participating in research projects.

Funding Opportunities:

The MDP assists in matching faculty with external funding opportunities large and small: from multiyear, group funding to short projects. If your research interests lie in the field of multidisciplinary design, let us know where your research program is headed and what sorts of resources you are seeking. We can help.

Student Support:

The MDP offers undergraduate skills training and support in organizing undergraduate researchers within the context of faculty research. We can help groups create processes and organizations that will maximize faculty research time.

IP Issues for Student Projects

Under UM Policies, UM students own their rights in IP they create as students (not as employees). Also, UM does not impose any confidentiality obligations on students concerning their coursework. Therefore, sponsors should assume that students working on a Design Project will own any IP rights resulting from that work and that students will have no confidentiality obligations concerning information a sponsor provides to them. Accordingly, UM expects that sponsors will include only nonproprietary, nonconfidential information in a Design Project. UM's general practice is that outside sponsors should not require students to assign their IP rights in Design Projects or to agree to confidentiality obligations concerning Design Projects.

If compelling reasons exist for sponsors to retain ownership of IP deriving from Design Projects or to require confidentiality of information sponsors provide to students, sponsors must seek approval from the course instructor to implement these arrangements prior to finalizing the sponsorship of the Design Project.
