A Memorial Service in honor of Professor Arthur Burks
Description: A Memorial Service in honor of Professor Arthur Burks (October 13, 1915- May 14, 2008) will be held June 20, 2008 at 5pm in the Computer Science and Engineering Building - Tishman Hall, in front of the ENIAC panels.
As most of you probably know, Professor Burks was the Master Programmer for the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), the world’s first general-purpose electronic computer, and he is responsible for bringing to Michigan a portion of the original machine.
Professor Burks joined the Philosophy Department at U-M in 1946, and retired from EECS in 1986. He founded the Logic of Computers Group in 1949 and was instrumental in the formation of the Communication Sciences graduate program and the Dept. of Computer and Communication Sciences (CCS), for which he served as its first Chair.
