Our Story : Design of Sustainable Technology Systems

Founded in 2000 by Professor Skerlos, the EASTlab was an outgrowth of research in recycling of coolants and lubricants using membrane systems. We still research these specializations today, for instance by using waste CO2 as a coolant and lubricant delivery system, and by using membranes to extract resources from wastewater. Over time, the lab grew and expanded its scope to apply the concepts of Design Science to the study of why some green technologies are not adopted by the market, and what can be done via product, process, and policy design to promote the diffusion of sustainable technologies.

About the EASTlab

The EASTlab was founded in 2000 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Univesity of Michigan. Our students have received degrees from ME, CEE, and SNRE. More ...
