Graduate Students Abroad

Yes, graduate students can study abroad!

With advance planning, study abroad can be a unique and valuable component of your graduate education.  Many of our partner institutions offer high-quality graduate instruction, often in English.  Due to the highly specialized nature of our graduate engineering programs, it is important to work closely with your faculty advisor to determine the timing, courses and/or research topics for an overseas experience.  Here are some tips for getting started:

  • Talk with your advisor about study abroad.  Ask for recommendations of leading institutions or research centers in your field of study.
  • Visit the web sites of our partner institutions or those that were recommended by your advisor.  Search for faculty who work in your area of interest and review course descriptions.
  • In addition to formal courses, remember that independent studies may also be possible with overseas faculty.
  • When considering study abroad, note the academic calendar of the partner institution and the language of instruction.
  • Narrow the list of possible courses and consult with the IPE office about your plans.  (See our contact page for walk-in advising hours and appointment scheduling.)
  • Visit the Rackham Graduate School and UM International Institute for funding updates.  The International Research Award competition is now open.  Scholarships up to $7,500 are available.  Application deadline: February 1, 2007.  Contact Amy Kehoe, International Institute, for more information (akehoe@umich.edu).
