Financial Planning
The cost of a program is often a major factor in determining where to go. If you choose a UM program, most financial aid packages will apply towards your costs. If you choose a non-UM program or are not a financial aid recipient, our office has resources to find possible funding sources.
Costs for IPE programs are estimated as follows:
1. Tuition:
a. If you attend an exchange institution (GE3 programs and all non-British and non-Australian programs), you PAY UM TUITION as if you were still in Ann Arbor.
b. If you attend schools in Britain or Australia, you pay tuition directly to the host institution. The institution bills you directly. UM is not involved in the billing process. Please make sure you familiarize yourself with these costs and dates by contacting the institution directly.
2. Living Expenses: For all IPE programs, living expenses are determined by costs listed on host institution websites or promotional literature.
Process for Funding Study Abroad
If you are a financial aid recipient:
- Speak to the Financial Aid Office to determine which portions of your aid package would apply to a UM study abroad program. You can do this preliminary inquiring as you are still researching programs. Please refer to the Financial Aid Study Abroad Information Sheet for relevant information.
- Once you have been accepted, our office will forward estimated study abroad expenses to the Financial Aid Office. These expenses include:
- Tuition
- Room and board
- Passport and visa costs
- Travel to host country
- Books and incidentals
Costs for extra-curricular travel are NOT included. You will receive notification when we have forwarded this information to the Financial Aid Office
- Contact Financial Aid Office to verify exactly how your package will cover these costs. They may require additional paperwork; fill out the appropriate forms.
- Verify with Student Financial Operations that excess monies in your account will be forwarded to the correct address. NOTE: These monies will be disbursed according to the UM tuition assessment and disbursement schedules. If your host institution requires payment outside of those times, contact directly to organize an alternate payment plan.
- If you are a MET recipient, you can apply MET to study abroad on UM programs. Please notify our office once you have registered for study abroad. We will contact the MET office to indicate that your MET money will be used for study abroad
If you are not a financial aid recipient, going on a non-UM program, or need additional funds:
- Refer to the Financial Aid Study Abroad Information Sheet for important guidelines regarding eligibility for Financial Aid.
- Look at the Scholarship Database. All funding sources are earmarked for study abroad only. Sources can be sorted based on destination, student gender, academic level, citizenship, and ethnic background. Remember to research this information early - funding deadlines are often annual and due Jan-March for the following academic year.
- Check out UM funding resources
- If you have a 3.4 cumulative GPA or better (7.0 for graduates) apply for the Merit Scholarship from the International Programs in Engineering office.
- Take a look at the International Institute. They have monies earmarked for graduates and undergraduates for research and internships abroad
- If you are attending an OIP program through Central Campus, investigate scholarships for their own programs.
- See if your study abroad program sponsor offers scholarships or other aid for its study abroad participants.
