Application Guidelines Course Evaluation Process

Application Guidelines

Although applications are not very complex we recommend that you begin the process 6-9 months before your anticipated departure date.  You can pick up an application from the International Programs in Engineering office or find them online on the IPE website. Our office will assist you in obtaining, completing, and mailing applications for any of our programs.

Application Deadlines

  • Application Deadline for Full Academic Year (Fall-Winter): Early March
  • Application Deadline for Fall term: Early March
  • Application Deadline for Winter term: Early September
  • Application Deadline for Summer: Varies by program

Application deadlines vary by program, so please check the website for the specific program you are interested in to find out the exact deadline. In some cases, the IPE office may accept applications after the posted deadline.  If the deadline has passed, please contact our office to find out if an extension is possible.  Due to space restrictions, some programs may fill-up before posted deadlines.  We recommend applying early in order to guarantee a space in your first choice location.  Please also note, some overseas universities post an alternate application deadline.  This deadline does not apply to UM engineering students.

How to Submit Application

Applications for IPE programs should be submitted directly to the IPE Office in 245 Chrysler Center.  You are required to submit the application form and all supporting documents prior to the application deadline.  The required materials for each application varies, so please review the application carefully. Applications are posted on the website for each program. Applications typically require the following documents, but not all applications require all of these materials:

  • Application form
  • Statement of purpose (a brief essay, not all applications require this)
  • 1-2 faculty recommendations (one from an engineering faculty member and one from a foreign language instructor, if going on a non-English program, not all applications require this.)
  • Official transcript(s) (in the original sealed envelope)
  • A list of your intended courses (which you must populate by researching the courses online)
  • Passport photos

Helpful Application Hints

  • Writing a Statement of Purpose - Downloadable Guidelines
  • Obtaining Faculty Recommendations: We recommend you cultivate relationships with faculty as soon as possible so they can describe your academic performance in good confidence. Participation in UROP, independent study and other research are a good way to build relationships with UM faculty
  • Ordering Official Transcripts: Official transcripts can be ordered via Wolverine Access.  You must submit the Official Transcript(s) in the original sealed envelope, to the IPE Office, along with your application materials
  • Some applications require a statement of signature from a UM advisor. Leave this section blank when you submit the application to the IPE office. The IPE advisor will complete this section before sending your application materials overseas
  • If the university you are applying to has an online application, make sure to submit a print-out of your completed application to the IPE office along with any supporting documents (transcripts, recommendations, etc.)
  • Passport Photos: The UM Photo Services Office provides passport photo services. They are located on the corner of S. University and E. University, at the southeast corner of the Diag.
  • Passport Applications: You can now download passport applications from the US Postal Service website
