Intl. Free Electives
International Free Electives
Participants are required to complete 6 credit hours of free elective courses with an international focus. Courses may be elected from any department and may be any level. International Free Elective courses might include international business, international economics, or other courses which are not necessarily dedicated to a specific region. However, a student may also choose to continue with courses focused on their region and apply them toward the international free elective requirement. A student may also consider courses which focus on a second region of the world and apply them towards this requirement.
The following would fulfill the International Free Elective requirement:
- Any course offered by a UM language department
- Any course which focuses on the student's chosen region
- Any course which focuses on a specific region of the world (even if it is not the student's chosen region)
- Any general international course, which covers a global topic
- Courses taken overseas through study abroad may be counted.
- Transfer credit from domestic U.S. universities may not be counted. Requests to count U.S. transfer credit will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Please contact an advisor with questions or for approval of a specific course. To request approval of a course you would like to take, please e-mail the course name and number to Stacie Edington at sjed@umich.edu. This approval may take 2-4 weeks, so please plan accordingly.
