Regional Focus

Regional Focus (300-level or higher)

PGE students are required to complete 8 credit hours of upper-level (300-level or higher) courses focusing on their chosen region. We recommend that students choose courses which will also count toward the College of Engineering Humanities/Social Science or free elective requirement. (Note: students who choose to focus on a region where English is the spoken language are expected to complete 16 credit hours of upper-level courses in place of the 8-credit language study requirement.)

There is a wide variety of courses which can be used to fulfill this requirement. These courses can be found in several departments including political science, history, art, music history, and several others.

Courses which may be counted:

  • UM courses which are 300-level or higher and focus on the student's chosen region.
  • Study Abroad courses that are 300-level or higher and taken in the student's chosen region, regardless of the subject matter. (For example, 300-level Mathematics may be counted toward the Regional Focus requirement if taken overseas.)
  • Transfer credit from other domestic institutions is not typically allowed to fulfill this requirement. However, requests to use transfer credit courses from domestic U.S. institutions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Recommended Regional Focus Courses:

The links above provide courses which have been pre-approved to fulfill the Regional Focus requirements (for the specific focus region(s) indicated). Students who plan to take a course which does not appear on this list must e-mail the course name and number to Stacie Edington at sjed@umich.edu, for approval. This approval may take 2-4 weeks, so please plan accordingly.
