Housing

Housing in the dorms and residence halls on campus is limited for graduate students and international transfer or NCFD students (exchange students) except in special circumstances. Please see the section on Northwood III below for on-campus housing information.  There are many good "off-campus" options, including cooperative houses and apartments.

There are a few important factors to know before selecting housing. You may choose to live on either North Campus or Central Campus. The main part of the University and most of the stores, restaurants and social events are located on Central Campus. The College of Engineering and the classes that you take will be located on North Campus. The University provides free bus service between the North and Central Campus that is very reliable and convenient, so housing on either Campus is a good option. Avoid housing located on South Campus.

Some housing at the University is designated as "substance-free". Please be aware that this means that absolutely no drinking or smoking is allowed.

UNIVERSITY HOUSING NORTHWOOD III HOUSING

Northwood III apartments are the newest on campus option for sophomore to senior undergraduate students and are the only on-campus housing offered to NCFD (exchange) students. Students can choose to rent individually or share a two or three bedroom unit with one or two roommates. All shared apartments are semi-furnished, and most utilities (including heat, electricity and internet access) are included. Northwood is located on North Campus, where most engineering, music, art and architecture classes take place. You will receive an e-mail inviting you to apply for Northwood Housing after your admission has been processed. Visit the website at: http://www.housing.umich.edu/northwood3/index.html for more detailed information on Northwood III, or visit the main Northwood site for information on all of Northwood Housing's options.

COOPERATIVE HOUSING (CO-OPS)

Co-ops are large houses where many students live together. Co-op residents must help out around the house and do a few hours of work (e.g. cleaning, cooking, etc.) per week. Co-op rent is typically the least expensive off-campus housing option. The Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC) is responsible for organizing all of the Co-ops on campus. There are 19 Co-op Houses on campus, so you have several to choose from. We recommend the Renaissance or O'Keefe houses on North Campus, but all of the Co-op houses offered are great!
Please visit the ICC website for specific details on Co-op house or to apply online: http://www.icc.coop/.
Be certain to apply right away, as spaces can fill up quickly!

APARTMENTS, HOUSES AND OTHER OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING

If you would prefer to live in an apartment or house, there are several options available to you. Please visit the Off-Campus Housing website for detailed information about the options available to you. http://www.offcampus.housing.umich.edu/lt/index.cfm

SHORT TERM TEMPORARY HOUSING

In some cases, students may not be able to move into the permanent housing until the day or two prior to the start of classes. If this is the case, you will need to arrange short-term housing for your orientation. Visit the short-term housing website for more information, or check the Betsy Barbour August Housing website.
