What is the CoE Lecture Capture System?

Developed by the College of Engineering's Office of Instructional Technology, the lecture capture system simplifies and automates the recording of lectures or special events for subsequent online viewing. Recordings can be scheduled ahead of time for fully automatic recording, or started manually for impromptu sessions. The goal of this system is to make the entire process of recording, editing, and posting lectures as easy and self-service as possible, while resulting in recordings that are viewable on a range of popular hardware and software platforms.

The CoE Lecture Capture System is a good fit for most classroom recordings. Video and audio of the instructor as well as what is being projected are recorded. When viewed on the web, the video is shown side-by-side with the projected content, and thumbnails of the content are provided for quick navigation. This makes the system particularly well suited for presentations where the content being shown on the projector is the most important visual element.

Instructors may choose to record some or all of their lectures. No additional software or hardware is needed on an instructor's computer to use the system, since all recording equipment is built-in to the classroom. A web-based interface is provided for control of the recording process and management of the recordings. Faculty who are interested in recording lectures can refer to the Quick Start Guide. Students should check the course syllabus or contact the instructor to find out if a particular class is being recorded.

Where is it available?

Recorders are installed in select college classrooms, shared facilities, and special purpose rooms. In addition, a mobile cart is available to record one-time events in other locations. Availability of the cart is limited, so please request a reservation by contacting caen@umich.edu with as much advance notice as possible. Note that the cart is not recommended for recurring recordings due to the inconveneience of checking out the cart, setting it up, and returning it after the event.

Refer to the Availability section to locate a classroom with a built-in recorder.
