Why student remotes?
Student remotes allow instructors to receive instant feedback from students on course materials, and record that feedback for later analysis. This feedback may take the form of either informal polls or more formal quizzes.
Students benefit as the instructor is able to gauge student understanding of the material in class, or between classes, and revisit material that is not well understood. Without remotes, instructors only receive feedback from exams, quizzes, and students willing to ask questions.
CAEN encourages instructors to use Qwizdom remotes, but only if the remotes will aid students in understanding course materials.
Why Qwizdom?
Qwizdom remotes have several features that are not found with many other remote systems. They:
- Display your answer before you submit it,
- Allow you to correct your answer before you submit it,
- Display whether or not your answer was submitted and accepted,
- Are relatively straightforward to use,
- Are used elsewhere on campus, limiting the need to purchase multiple remotes for multiple classes.
How do I purchase a Qwizdom remote?
Qwizdom student remotes must be purchased from the U-M Computer Showcase. As of September 2008, new remotes cost $35. If available, used remotes cost $22.
What can I do with my Qwizdom remote after my class is over?
You have several options:
- Keep your remote for your next Qwizdom-enabled class,
- Sell or trade your remote to/with another student,
- Sell it back to the Showcase for approximately one-half of the original purchase price.
If you are leaving campus after your class, please remember to sell your remote before leaving campus. If you do leave campus with your remote, please recycle it.
How do I use my Qwizdom remote?
Qwizdom remotes have no useful function outside of a Qwizdom-enabled class.
Turning on and entering Session ID
Once in class, turn on your remote by holding down the Menu button for several seconds. Your remote will briefly display the remote version number, and then prompt you for a Session ID. Your Session ID will be provided by your instructor, and may change from class to class. Enter the Session ID using the numeric keypad, and then press the Send button (located directly below the Menu button).
Fixing an incorrect Session ID and/or User ID
If you are not prompted for a Session ID, or you enter it incorrectly, press the Menu button until the word "Search" appears. Then, press the Left (<) or Right (>) buttons until "Sess. ID" appears, and press the Send button. Your remote may display your current Session ID, and then ask, "Change?" Press the Yes/T button. When prompted for Session ID, enter the correct Session ID, and press the Send button.
If prompted for a User ID, enter your 8-digit UMID number. If you have not previously entered your UMID number, press the Menu button until "Search" appears, press the Left (<) or Right (>) buttons until "User ID" appears, and then press the Send button. Your remote may display your current User ID, and then ask, "Change?" Press the Yes/T. When prompted for User ID, enter your 8-digit UMID number, and press the Send button. Once your User ID is set, you should not need to set it again, and should not be prompted to do so.
Answering questions
If your instructor is not ready, then your remote may display, "No Host". Once your instructor is ready, press the Send button.
Once your instructor is ready, and you have entered the correct Session ID and User ID, your remote will display, "Qwizdom". If this does not happen, inform your instructor.
Once the instructor initiates a question, your remote will display the question number after "Q#" at the top of the display. The remote may also display possible answers for True/False and Multiple Choice questions. Enter your answer using the keypad. Use the Minus (-) button for negative numbers, the Decimal (.) button for decimal numbers, and the Fraction (/) button for fractions. When possible answers are displayed, you may use either the keypad to enter your answer or the Left (<) and Right (>) buttons to select your answer. Press the Send button to submit your answer, as your answer will not be submitted until you do so.
After submitting your answer, toward the bottom of the display, your remote will show either a check mark (✓) for a correct answer, an X (✗) for a wrong answer, or both (✓✗) for an answer without right/wrong information. If you do not see these marks, push the Send button again.
If you enter an incorrect answer, you may be able to correct it by pressing the Clear (C) button and entering your corrected answer. Press the Send button to submit your answer, as your answer will not be submitted until you do so. You may always change answers before pressing the Send button, but you may only change answers after pressing the Send button if the instructor allows it.
Turning off
When the presentation concludes, your remote will turn off automatically. If this does not happen, you may always turn off your remote by holding down the Menu button for several seconds.
How do I get help with my Qwizdom remote?
Check with your instructor first, then Contact CAEN or visit the CAEN Hotline. If your remote is defective, visit the U-M Computer Showcase and be sure to bring your receipt, in case the remote must be exchanged or returned.
