Background
In September 2000, a College of Engineering committee on the Use of Instructional Technology presented its report. Among the committee’s key recommendations was to create a unit that would be responsible both for the instructional technology equipment in College classrooms and training faculty and staff in its use. Following this recommendation, the College did create a unit to support instructional technology and provided an operating budget to support its work. Philip Treib directs the Instructional Technology effort as part of the College’s Office of Information Technology. Since its inception, the improvement of classroom facilities and providing support for these facilities has been a priority. The major themes for this work have been to increase faculty access to advanced instructional technology, remove barriers to the use of these technologies through improvements in reliability and usability, and to set priorities based on close attention to faculty feedback.
