Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Am I eligible to attend Department Visits if I am a prospective Master's student?
Unfortunately, no.
If I receive an invitation, what should I do about travel arrangements?
Once you have been invited and register online, you will receive all of the necessary travel information through the web. This includes the travel agency you can contact to book your free flight, the hotel information where we have booked your rooms, and the shuttle service we have reserved to take you to and from the Detroit Metro airport and the University of Michigan campus.
What about the hotel arrangements?
Once you have registered to attend the Engineering Department Visits, you do not need to worry about hotel arrangements. We will take care of all room arrangements. You will be assigned a same-sex roommate.
Can I attend the Engineering Department Visits program if I am a prospective student?
Unfortunately, no. The program is only for students who have officially applied for the Fall 2010 term and been invited by their department. The College of Engineering, in conjunction with Rackham Graduate School, hosts annual events including the Engineering Graduate Symposium for all prospective graduate engineering students.
Are Engineering Department Visits really fully funded?
Yes. If you are admitted (or receiving serious consideration for admission) to an engineering graduate degree program for the Fall 2010 term at the University of Michigan, then you are eligible to receive an invitation. Invitations are determined by faculty members in each department. All airfare, transportation, hotel, on-campus meals, and miscellaneous fees are included. Outside of personal spending, students do not have to incur any out-of-pockets expenses.
What should I bring with me?
We suggest planning accordingly and when packing keep the following in mind:
- The weather could be cold so be sure to check the latest forecast and brings hats, gloves, and a heavy coat, if necessary.
- Unless otherwise notified by your department, casual wear is appropriate for all Departmental Visitations activities.
- Comfortable shoes are important when walking around campus.
- Remember that most airlines charge additional fees for checked baggage. We cannot reimburse for this expense.
