Admission Criteria
Admission is competitive for all masters and doctoral programs. Admission is determined by the following:
- Department, degree, and concentration of interest.
- Transcripts of your academic record.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General test scores. While the GRE general test is required of all applicants, including University of Michigan graduates who apply to CoE Ph.D. programs, our focus is on the student’s academic and research potential. Since GRE scores have been shown to have little or no correlation with student excellence in research at the University of Michigan, we will no longer require a minimum score for the combined Verbal and Quantitative tests or for the Analytical Writing test.
- Recommendations from people who are familiar with your work, in particular faculty members who have supervised your coursework or research.
- A written description of your graduate study objectives.
- A personal statement for any additional information or extenuating circumstances is optional.
- An applicant with a degree from an institution where the language of instruction is not English is required to provide official score reports from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
- Although departments may adjust their GPA requirements to reflect their own applicant needs, the College generally looks for applicants who have demonstrated academic effort through a minimum GPA of 3.3.
