Manny Hernandez
Biomedical Engineering

Manny Hernandez completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. He attended the IMPACT program in March 2003 at the University of Michigan and later enrolled in the Biomedical Engineering Department during the fall 2003 term. He has since completed his Masters degree and is currently in the Biomedical Engineering PhD program. His research interests are in the area of whole-body biomechanics, particularly in the role of aging in the postural control of downward reaching and pick-up tasks. He is currently working with Dr. Neil Alexander and Dr. James Ashton-Miller in the Mobility Research Center. In addition to his academic interests, Manny is also interested in promoting the awareness of appropriate technology and sustainable development in the underprivileged communities on campus through participation in BLUElab (Better Living Using Engineering Laboratory) and Health in Action (HIA).
"My weekend experience in IMPACT 2003 was a pivotal moment in my graduate program search. In addition to the campus and lab tours, the opportunity to talk to University of Michigan (UM) graduate students, provided an earnest assessment of the challenges faced in graduate study and the unique qualities of the UM campus, which helped overcome those challenges. These discussions provided a significant insight to the state of the campus and helped me make my decision of graduate school with confidence."
