The President's Donor Challenge: Enriching the Student Global Experience
"As other nations emerge as economic powers and our society grows more international, so, too, must a student’s education. There is so much to be learned from observing, from interacting, and from listening to people who live and work in different cultures than ours."
—President Mary Sue Coleman, November 2007 Vision and Goals speech
Today’s Michigan students face a world very unlike the one their predecessors knew. They enjoy unprecedented, instantaneous access to information about the far reaches of the globe. They have an unmatched ability to pursue career opportunities around the world. Whether they dedicate themselves to business, politics, science or the arts, they will be operating in a truly globalized future.
This new flatness is not equal to sameness, however. Michigan graduates might return to their hometowns or venture half a world away, but they will inevitably need the skills and knowledge to work with people from different backgrounds.
To help them succeed, Michigan must provide them with rich opportunities to experience other peoples and places: to encounter different cultures and languages, alternative attitudes and ways of seeing the world. Students need to travel and learn abroad as part of their preparation to become global leaders.
President Mary Sue Coleman has announced a new Donor Challenge, known as The Student Global Experience, to help provide UM-Ann Arbor students with such transformative experiences. The program matches qualifying donor gifts one-for-two ($1 in matching funds for every $2 in donor support) in order to support outstanding international learning opportunities.
