Spring Programs

2011 SPRING PROGRAM OFFERINGS AND COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Programs for 7th Graders

Exploring Engineering

This course will be held at the University of Michigan Detroit Center located on Woodward Ave in Detroit, MI. Exploring Engineering will provide an insight to the different engineering disciplines and how that discipline influences the world around us.  Students will be introduced to instructors from different departments of the UM College of Engineering and be given hands on tasks to connect them to the different disciplines.  This course is designed to assist students in understanding the diverse nature of the engineering field so that they can make informed choices about which engineering programs they are interested in getting involved in the future.

Programs for 8th and 9th Graders

Glow Blue

Sponsored by the Department of Nuclear Engineering, "Glow Blue" will provide an introduction to basic physics, energy sources, and topics surrounding nuclear engineering.  Through hands on activities and group discussions, students will learn how a nuclear reactor works, why there is a debate over nuclear energy, and how scientists use virtual reality to understand radiation physics.

Wonders of Flight

Sponsored by the Department of Aerospace Engineering and the Michigan Space Grant Consortium, "The Wonders of Flight" will introduce the basics of flight dynamics such as aerodynamics, jet propulsion, rocket fabrication, wind tunnel testing, and space exploration.  The lessons and demonstrations will challenge students to explore math, physics, astronomy, and aerospace engineering.  The hands on activities will include launching rockets and building balsawood gliders.

Pirates of Michigan

Sponsored by the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, "Pirates of Michigan" will introduce students to the fundamentals of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Students will explore topics including hydrodynamics, marine engineering, ship design, underwater remote operated vehicles, and virtual reality.

Build It Bigger, Better, Stronger!

Sponsored by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the American Society of Civil Engineers, "Build It Bigger, Better, Stronger!" will provide a hands on learning experience for students interested in pursuing a career in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Students will challenge their peers in a bridge building competition, engage in a surveying scavenger hunt, explore a sustainable facility, and build on their math and science skills through a variety of other interactive lessons.

Living in a Material World

Sponsored by the Department of Material Science, "Living in a Material World" will demonstrate how mankind has discovered innumerable materials throughout the course of history, and address how we know which one to use for any given application.  Materials are chosen based on their properties.  This program will explore basic materials science concepts and properties, in addition to the destructive and non-destructive tests used to measure them.

WIMS Superstar Challenge

Sponsored by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, "WIMS Superstar Challenge" will teach students the fundamentals of electrical and computer engineering and its applications to modern technology.  Students will explore these topics through hands on experiments involving computer programming and robotics.  The lessons will also include Wireless Integrated Microsystems (WIMS), Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS), and Neuroprosthesis.
