Michigan Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (M-STEM) Academy
The M-STEM Academy is designed to maximize the academic, personal, and professional success of students, with the goal of preparing them for the engineering global workforce. The M-STEM Academy spans the first two years and includes a pre-freshman summer transition program, customized advising, career guidance, academic learning enrichment activities, and assistance in obtaining a paid professional summer internship or research opportunity.
During the summer M-STEM students take courses in mathematics, computer programming, communication skills, and engineering problem solving. In addition they will attend workshops to facilitate their academic, professional, and personal development. Upon completion of the summer program M-STEM participants will receive $1500 to be used towards their educational expenses. Throughout their first year at the University M-STEM students will be provided with various academic and professional development resources such as an academic advisor, peer mentor, tutoring support and a success coach who will assess the students' interests and create customized plans for their success. M-STEM students will receive an additional $750 stipend for the successful completion of the fall semester and $750 for the successful completion of the winter semester. The following summer M-STEM students will be allowed to choose between a research experience and an internship, which will provide hands-on experience to further enhance their classroom education. During the second academic year students will receive tutoring and coaching based on their personal interests and will be greatly assisted in their transition to their desired major and department resources.
