Description
Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan is an integrated discipline aimed at creating harmony between the natural and built environments and mitigating natural and man-made hazards. Our mission is to educate the leaders who will design the future infrastructure systems, protect the environment, and engineer a quality of life on a global scale. Our students learn how to fabricate new materials for infrastructure systems that improve security, reliability, and sustainability by engaging multidisciplinary groups, and encouraging technical and non-technical collaborations. Our students also learn how to develop microfluidics sensors and couple bioremediation with physicochemical processes for enhanced treatment of hazardous waste sites. Furthermore, our students learn how to deal with ambiguities in problem definition and contingencies in the process of problem solving. Upon graduation, our students are ready to lead an adaptive, rapidly changing organization, in which engineers of diverse specialties are brought together to act conjunctively and optimize their product by continuous improvement. Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan was founded in January 1837, when the superintendent of public instruction for the State of Michigan proposed the creation of a new professorship in civil engineering and architecture. In 1853, Alexander Winchell became the first Civil Engineering professor and on January 20, 1854, he taught the first Civil Engineering class. William V. Snyder was awarded the first Engineering degree in 1857. This made the University of Michigan the sixth university overall and the first public university in the country to award a degree in Engineering. The first African-American Civil Engineering graduate was Fred B. Pelham who graduated in 1887. The first female to receive a B.S.E. degree in Civil Engineering was Marian Sarah Parker in 1895. Since its creation, Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan has been recognized as a premier program, whose impact on the academy, government and industry is unparalleled. The enduring strength of our department can be largely attributed to the sound foundation laid by our faculty and the support we receive from our alumni. We have a vision for a research-driven department in which the focus remains on learning, and the discovery of new knowledge is based on a student-centered culture. We create new sophisticated technologies for teaching and research, but we complement them with effective advising and mentoring, teamwork and experience-based learning that strengthen the technical skills and simultaneously ensure the personal growth of our graduates. We seek new opportunities and partnerships that enhance the interdisciplinary character of the department, but we guard our core mission of improving the infrastructure and protecting the environment. We make intensive use of information technology in order to reach a broader audience, but we maintain the personal student-teacher relationship, which is the cornerstone of the Michigan experience.
