Application Information
The Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies (otherwise known as Rackham) is a community of scholars, researchers, and students in over 130 programs of study at the University of Michigan. Joined together by the rigors of academic pursuit, the Rackham Graduate School works in conjunction with 17 schools and colleges to recruit applicants, administer the admissions process, and serve students through the final stages of degree attainment. On average, more than 4,000 graduate degrees are awarded per year. Our more than 85,000 Rackham alumni are a diverse group of people who utilize their talents and training to transform our global community in thousands of ways throughout the world
The NERS department admissions requirements for prospective students are determined by an evaluation of the following (detailed descriptions below). All information should be submitted using the online process. Transcripts should be scanned and sent to pjgramer@umich.edu. In all communications, please enter your name in the subject line.
- An online application and application fee. Applications accepted starting September 1st. If possible, please apply during the fall term. Deadline is January 15th for fall term (September); October 15th for winter term (January).
- Official Transcripts: Two step process:
a) To Rackham: Official transcripts from all universities sent to address below.
b) To NERS: A scan of official or unofficial transcripts to NERS will expedite your application. Do not duplicate efforts with NERS. Use scan and email or mail unofficial copy and write UMID on transcripts. - Three letters of recommendation submitted online.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general exam (no subject test required). At this point in time, take the GRE as soon as possible for fall fellowship applications. The GRE is mandatory for fellowships and financial support.
- Academic statement of purpose
- Personal statement
- Resume
- TOEFL for international students.
In order not to delay your application, make sure you send the required application materials to Rackham and NERS. Most, if not all, application materials may be submitted online using the Embark online application system.
1. Application must be submitted online along with application fee. Terms of new enrollment are: Fall (September) and Winter (January) terms. No enrollment Spring (April) or Summer (June). Please email pjgramer@umich.edu or (734)615-8810 if you have questions or need special consideration. You will receive a UMID a few days after you submit your application online.
*Straggling application material will be accepted. Late applicants will be considered. Please call admissions (734-615-8810) or email pjgramer@umich.edu.
2. Transcripts: Rackham requires an official transcript sent directly from previous universities. During the interim while waiting for your previous universities to mail official transcripts to Rackham, NERS will accept scanned official or unofficial transcripts during the application process to expedite your application. It is recommended that your Grade Point Average (GPA) is equal to or greater than 3.2 on a 4.0 scale. However, all applications are considered. If possible, write your UMID on all transcripts. 3. Reference letters from three faculty members or employers who have supervised your coursework or research: References should be submitted using the online application system. If you are an international student in the States, we require a minimum of one reference letter, preferably two, from your current institution.
4. Graduate Record Exam (GRE): At this point in time, take the GRE as soon as possible for fellowship applications. The GRE is mandatory for fellowships and financial support. The GRE (code #:1839) is not required for the master's degree but is required for the doctoral program. It is recommended that all students take the GRE for financial consideration and fellowship applications. Verbal and Quantitative combined should be greater than or equal to 1200; the Analytical Writing should be greater than or equal to 4.0/6.0). A subject test is not required.
5. Academic statement of purpose for graduate study objectives including past or present internships and research interests.
6. Personal statement suggestions are addressing volunteer and/or community service; extra-curricular activities; leadership activities; educational, cultural, geographic or socio-economic background underrepresented in your discipline of graduate study; financial hardship; first generation U.S. citizen or first generation in family to graduate from a four-year college, etc.
7. A resume.
8. International Students: An applicant whose previous degree is from an institution at which the language of instruction is not English is required to provide official score reports from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (A minimum of: CBT 220; Paper 560; iBT > 84) or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).
