Application Information

The Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies (otherwise known as Rackham) is a community of scholars, researchers, and students in over 130 programs of study at the University of Michigan. Joined together by the rigors of academic pursuit, the Rackham Graduate School works in conjunction with 17 schools and colleges to recruit applicants, administer the admissions process, and serve students through the final stages of degree attainment. On average, more than 4,000 graduate degrees are awarded per year. Our more than 85,000 Rackham alumni are a diverse group of people who utilize their talents and training to transform our global community in thousands of ways throughout the world

The NERS department admissions requirements for prospective students are determined by an evaluation of the following (detailed descriptions below).  All information should be submitted using the online process.  Transcripts should be scanned and sent to pjgramer@umich.edu. In all communications, please enter your name in the subject line.

  1. An online application and application fee.  Applications accepted starting September 1st.  If possible, please apply during the fall term.  Deadline is January 15th for fall term (September); October 15th for winter term (January).
  2. Official Transcripts: Two step process:
              a) To Rackham:  Official transcripts from all universities sent to address below.
              b) To NERS: A scan of official or unofficial transcripts to NERS will expedite your application.   Do not duplicate efforts with NERS.    Use scan  and email or  mail unofficial copy and write UMID on transcripts.
  3. Three letters of recommendation submitted online.
  4. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general exam (no subject test required).  At this point in time, take the GRE as soon as possible for fall fellowship applications.  The GRE is mandatory for fellowships and financial support.
  5. Academic statement of purpose
  6. Personal statement
  7. Resume
  8. TOEFL for international students.

In order not to delay your application, make sure you send the required application materials to Rackham and NERS.  Most, if not all, application materials may be submitted online  using the Embark online application system.

      1.  Application must be submitted online along with application fee.  Terms of new enrollment are:  Fall (September) and Winter (January) terms.  No enrollment Spring (April) or Summer (June).  Please email pjgramer@umich.edu or (734)615-8810 if you have questions or need special consideration.  You will receive a UMID a few days after you submit your application online.

*Straggling application material will be accepted.  Late applicants will be considered.  Please call admissions (734-615-8810) or email pjgramer@umich.edu.

      2.  Transcripts:  Rackham requires an official transcript sent directly from previous universities.  During the interim while waiting for your previous universities to mail official transcripts to Rackham, NERS will accept scanned official or unofficial  transcripts during the application process to expedite your application.  It is recommended that your Grade Point Average (GPA) is equal to or greater than 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.   However, all applications are considered.  If possible, write your UMID on all transcripts.  Send official copies to:
