U-GLOS Station 003, Grand Traverse Bay

NDBC 45021
Location: 45.048 N 85.493 W

U-GLOS Station 3 was first deployed in 2006 by the University of Michigan's Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratories (MHL) in partnership with Michigan Sea Grant, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Northwestern College Water Studies Institute, The Great Lakes Maritime Academy and Team Elmer's. In the summer of 2006 the original buoy from Station 1 was deployed in the Station 3 location. This buoy was taken off line the fall of 2006 due to erratic performance. In 2008 the MHL received funding from the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS), the Great Lakes node of the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) for the design and fabrication of an environmental monitoring buoy to be deployed as Station 3. This buoy was designed and built during the winter season and was deployed in April of 2009. This buoy measures wind speed and direction, air and water temperature, relative humidity, wave direction, height and period. The data is logged internally as well as transmitted in ten minute intervals to the internet via cellular modem.
