Graduate degree programs related to industrial health and safety are brought together in the Center.
The Occupational Safety Engineering and Ergonomics Program is offered by the College of Engineering's Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering. It is intended for engineers and science majors who wish to acquire an M.S. or Ph.D. degree. Courses and research activities emphasize accident and injury prevention through engineering control of workplace hazards.
The Industrial Hygiene Program offers graduate academic (M.S., Ph.D.) and professional (M.P.H., Dr.PH) degrees through the School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences. The program provides comprehensive education and research training in occupational health, with an emphasis on workplace exposure assessment and control. The IH Program is fully accredited by the American Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) and is a key component of the University of Michigan's NIOSH ERC. Coursework includes toxicology, epidemiology, biostatistics, occupational and environmental diseases, industrial hygiene, exposure assessment, control technology, ergonomics, occupational health law, physical hazards, and other topics relevant to IH training.
The Hazardous Substances Academic Training (HSAT) program is offered through the School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences. The program provides training in the management of hazardous substances in the environment and the workplace for professionals in the environmental health and industrial hygiene fields. The program draws on specialized coursework and experience in public health, environmental science, engineering and law, and leads to the MS degree in Industrial Hygiene or a dual MS degree in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health.
The Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology program is offered through the School of Public Health's Department of Environmental Health Sciences. The program provides students with the opportunity to study the effects of environmental and occupational exposures on human health, including exposure measurements. Coursework for the program is drawn from the departments of Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and fulfills requirements for the MPH degree in Environmental Health Sciences.
The Occupational Health Nursing program is offered by the Division of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction in the School of Nursing. It is designed for Registered Nurses holding a baccalaureate degree in nursing who wish to prepare for leadership roles in Occupational Health Nursing. The M.S. degree prepares the student for a professional career while the Ph.D. prepares the student for a career in research, academia, or corporate settings.
These academic degree programs are brought together in the Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering (COHSE). The Center promotes a multi-disciplinary educational experience through common courses, seminars, and professional projects. The multi-disciplinary theme extends to research activities where faculty and students from all programs collaborate on a wide variety of projects.
