Repeating Courses

A C- or better level of performance is necessary for a course that is a prerequisite for a later elected course. If you receive a grade below a C- in any of the following courses, you must repeat the courses before electing the next course.

ChE 230, 330, 341, 342, 343, 344, 360
Chemistry 210, 211
Math 115, 116, 216
Physics 140, 141

When you repeat a course, you will earn MHP (Michigan Honor Points) but no additional credit. Both grades are used in computing the grade point average. Note that you may not repeat a course in which you earned a grade of C or better.

Drop/Add

1st - 3rd week in Fall and Winter; 1-2 week in Spring or Summer

  • You can use Web Registration

4th - 9th week in Fall and Winter; 3-4 1/2th week in Spring or Summer

  • If you drop a class during this period, you will receive a 'W' on your transcript for the class. A "W" simply means that a student has dropped the course after the third week of a full term and that the College accepted the reason for the drop and gave its approval.
  • Pick up drop/add form in Undergraduate Program Office, 3090 H.H. Dow.
  • Complete top of form and ADD or DROP section; obtain signature from Christine Moellering or Dr. Montgomery AND A SIGNATURE FROM THE COURSE INSTRUCTOR.
  • Take form to the Academic Services Office in 1401 LEC and they will process the drop/add,

After 9th week in Fall and Winter; after 4 1/2th week in Spring and Summer

  • Make an appointment with Dr. Montgomery to discuss your situation. Drops after this time are only allowed for extenuating circumstances. Note that not doing well in and of itself is not considered an extenuating circumstance.

Note:

If you want to enroll in only 211 or 216, enroll in both 210/211 or 215/216, check into the lab, get padlock for drawer, then drop the lecture and the lab sections for Chem 210 or 215.

If you want to elect just 210 or 215, go to 1500 Chemistry and get an override from Kelly Baugher, kbaugher@umich.edu or call 647-2858.

Pass/Fail

You can elect the following courses as pass/fail:

HU/SS electives (including Economics and courses in your sequence)
Free Electives

You can modify courses through the ninth week of classes (4 1/2 week during Spring and Summer).

1st - 3rd week in Fall and Winter; 1-2 week in Spring or Summer

  • You can use Web Registration. Select MODIFY

4th - 9th week in Fall and Winter; 3-4 1/2th week in Spring or Summer

  • Pick up drop/add form in Undergraduate Program Office, 3090 H.H. Dow
  • Complete top of form and the MODIFY section. In column labeled 'Modifier', write P/F; obtain signature from Christine Moellering or Dr. Montgomery
  • Take signed form to the Academic Services Office, 1401 Lurie Building for processing

You cannot modify a course after the 9th week in Fall and Winter; 4 1/2 week in Spring and Summer, except for extenuating circumstances. Note that not doing well in and of itself is not considered an extenuating circumstance.

You may not elect more than four courses or 14 credit hours as P/F during your stay at Michigan, and you can modify only two courses per term or one in a half term.

Audit (or Visit)

You can audit or visit a course with permission of course instructor and the ChE Undergraduate Office. You will receive a "VI" instead of a letter grade and receive no credit for the audited course. You must make your decision to audit a course during the first 6 weeks of the term (first 3 weeks of the Spring and Summer terms). Note that you cannot satisfy any program requirements with a course audit. You must receive credit for all courses that are required for your degree.

To audit a course:

  • Pick up drop/add form in Undergraduate Program Office, 3090 H.H. Dow
  • Complete top of form and the MODIFY section. In column labeled 'Modifier', write VI. Obtain signature from Christine Moellering or Dr. Montgomery; you must also obtain your instructor's signature
  • Take signed form to the Academic Services Office, 1401 Lurie Building for processing

Withdrawing From All Classes

To disenroll from your classes (before the start of classes) or to withdraw (after the beginning of classes), you must complete a Withdrawal Notice form at the Engineering Academic Services Office, 1401 LEC.

Calculating Your ChE GPA

Your major GPA is based only on the 10 core ChE courses. You can
download this Excel spreadsheet that describes how to calculate it.

If you repeated a ChE course:

  • For the purposes of determining class rank, all instances of your taking any of the ChE courses are included. That is, if you took ChE 230 twice, BOTH instances are included in the GPA calculations.
  • For the purposes of determining whether you meet the requirements of a 2.0 major GPA, only the final instances of each repeated course are included in the GPA calculations.
