Credit-Limited and Excluded Courses

Unrestricted electives may be selected from the offerings of any regular academic unit of the University and from the Pilot Program.

  • All undergraduate programs in the College of Engineering will accept up to 12 credit hours toward unrestricted electives from credits earned by a student in 300- and 400-level courses in military, naval, or air science.
  • Tutorial courses are not acceptable for credit or grade points but will be included on the student's official record.
  • All undergraduate degrees will receive a maximum of 3 credit hours in the following areas:
    • Performance courses in the schools of music or art, including marching band;
    • Courses which require tutoring of other students enrolled in courses offered under the Keller Plan or similar plans;
      (Note: All courses elected beyond the credit limit will not provide credit toward a degree. However, the grades will be used in computing GPA.)

Engineering Electives - Excluded Courses

The following courses are NOT allowed to be used as engineering electives in the chemical engineering program. (NOTE: Other courses may be added to this list later)

Any AOSS course - not enough engineering science
CEE 401 - not engineering technical course
EECS 284 - programming, not engineering
BioME 295 & 495 - seminar courses

Courses Not Counted for Degree Credit

  • Any English Language Institute (ELI) course, such as Eng Lng I 120 * -- The ELI offers advanced instruction in English language to non-native speakers.
  • Math 105, 110, or 112 * -- Students who are deficient in Algebra and Trigonometry when they enter UM take these.
  • Any English Composition Board (ECB) course ** -- Some students are required to take this as part of their Intro. Composition requirement
  • Courses that are too similar in content ** -- Students can only receive credit for one such course. These courses include:
    • Engr 101 AND EECS 183
    • Math 116 AND Math 119

Courses for which student already has credit **

There are instances in which a student has advanced placement or transfer credit for a course and then also takes the course here. If you have received credit twice for the same course (this shouldn't happen very often), please let Christine Moellering know. In most cases, the advanced placement or transfer credit will be removed from your transcript.

Credit by exam for foreign language

Credit by examination for foreign languages, either at the University of Michigan or Advanced Placement, will be granted up to a maximum of eight credit hours. Students earning language credit by completing qualifying courses at the University of Michigan, designated by LR or HU, or by transfer credit of equivalent courses from any other institution of high learning, may apply all credits earned towards humanities.

 >>>Credit by Exam for 1st year courses (100-level) will count as free elective credit
 >>>Credit by Exam for 2nd year courses (200-level) will count as Humanities

* while these courses will not provide credit toward a degree, the grades will be used in computing GPA

** courses will appear on transcript but are not acceptable for credit or grade points.
