Henry Wang has a B.S. (1972) from Iowa State, and an M.S. (1974) and a Ph.D. (1977) both from the Massachussetts Institute of Technology.

Research Interests:

Pharmaceutical Engineering: Advances in Human Genome Project (HGP) and automated ultra-high throughput(HT) screening has transformed the entire drug discovery and development process. A new breed of pharmaceutical engineers must be trained to facilitate this new development. A new research and training program in "Pharmaceutical Engineering" jointly adminsitered between the College of Engineering and College of Pharmacy has been initiated. Some of the research topics in Pharmaceutical Engineering include:1. Computational biology, chemistry and engineering; 2. Automated HT screening and characterization; 3. Crystal engineering; 4. Scale translation in solids processing; 5. Biomanufacturing and cGMP issues; 6. Novel gene and drug delivery systems.

Bioprocessing for Sustainable Development:
A new paradigm of devising a new sustainable and environmentally sound industry to manufacture various chemicals and products has been advocated here. This requires the development of a new generation of ecologically compatible "cleaner" manufacturing processes. Bioprocessing and biotechnology should have a significant impact on this development. New and sustainable bioprocesses can be designed to manufacture biofuels, specialty chemicals and pharmacueticals. For example, high density transgenic plant cultivation using a mobile photobioreactors in an automated greenhouse has been proposed to produce various specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Biofuels and organic acids production from renewable resources have been investigated in this laboratory for quite some time.Novel biological and clay adsorbents are being investigated as co-immobilized delivery systems for environmental restoration.
