Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Positions

Department of Chemical Engineering
Winter 2010

Available positions in: ChE 330, ChE 341, ChE 344, ChE 360, ChE 460, ChE 487

Application procedure:
Applicants should submit the online application indicating their top three course choices, experience and/or reason for GSIing in a particular course, and attach a cover letter and resume. Application deadline is October 31, 2009.

GSI Application

Minimum qualifications: At least one and preferably two of the following,

  1. undergraduate degree in chemical engineering
  2. one year in chemical engineering graduate studies


Selection criteria will include (in addition to the above):

Academic performance, teaching or taking the same or similar course, previous performance as a GSI, fluency in written and oral English, interview with instructor, number of years as a graduate student. Qualified candidates may be interviewed by the faculty. The department will make selections based upon the above criteria.

Selection decisions for Fall term courses will be completed by December 2009.

General description of duties:
Lecture courses: teaching a discussion session, grading assignments, holding office hours
Lab courses: supervise laboratory section, grading assignments, holding office hours

Appointments will range between a 25% (10 hours/week) to 50% (20 hours/week). In addition, GSIs will receive full health benefits and tuition.

New GSIs are required to attend training courses offered by CRLT and the College of Engineering and a chemical engineering department GSI workshop, which are held in September and January. GSIs must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.

International students assigned to teach (and whose native language is not English) will be required to obtain a minimum score on the English Language Institute oral English test (OET). Contact Susan Hamlin by email at hamlins@umich.edu, or in person at 3310 GG Brown to arrange this evaluation.

Unsuccessful applications will be retained for consideration in the event that there are last minute openings.
