Application Deadline:
Fall Admission (starts September): January 15
Winter Admission (starts January): October 15
Application Fee:
U.S. citizens and permanent residents: $60
Non-U.S. citizens: $75
Admission and financial support are determined by the evaluation of recommendations from three faculty members (especially those from whom you have taken courses or who have supervised your research), your academic transcript, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test scores, and a personal statement (a discussion of the personal journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree).
If you have a Bachelor’s degree, you may apply either to the M.S. degree program or to the PhD degree program. Preference is given to the PhD applicants for admission and financial aid.
Applicants are required to apply electronically; you can find application details at the Rackham Graduate School website, www.rackham.umich.edu.
The following application documents are submitted through the online application.
- Statement of Purpose (statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and how Michigan’s graduate program will help you meet your career and educational objectives).
- Personal Statement (This is not the Academic Statement of Purpose, but a discussion of the personal journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree.)
- Admissions Conduct Code
- Three Letters of Recommendation. We prefer that these be submitted electronically via the online application. Recommendations can also be made by letters sent from recommenders to the department.
