Barry Wolf (PhD '02) and Flat Charlie are standing in front of a 15 liter working volume B. Braun Biotech BIOSTAT C bioreactor located in MSRB2. The bioreactor, in combination with a Pharmacia BioPilot chromatography system, is used for preparation of gram quantities of mammalian cell produced proteins such as monoclonal antibodies. Barry works within the U of M's Center for Gene Therapy where he is responsible for the cell culture and purification process development and production of large scale mammalian proteins. Customers who require gram scale amounts of protein typically are involved in pre-clinical research.
