My research is focused on developing a portable, low-cost microfluidic device for pathogen identification. First viral RNA will be extracted and purified from readily available samples such as throat swabs or blood. A droplet-based platform has been developed for this task, on which cell lysis, RNA extraction, contaminant removal and RNA elution are automatically performed within several small droplets. Then, the purified RNA will be amplified via a fast in-drop RT-random PCR protocal. Finally, the PCR products are transferred into a disposable capillary microarray for genotyping.
