Welcome to the Department

Welcome to the University of Michigan Chemical Engineering webpage! Here you will find information on our department's educational and research activities. Our course listings, research programs, alumni events, and news items are only a mouse-click away. We are proud of our long tradition of excellence in both teaching and research. Our department has been educating leaders in the chemical engineering profession for over a century.

The department and faculty offer a broad range of research projects that span over all major areas in both traditional chemical engineering (such as fluids, polymers, colloids, reaction engineering, separations, and statistical thermodynamics) and emerging areas (such as DNA sequencing on a chip, gene therapy, metalloprotein drug design, bioinformatics, green chemistry and computational engineering). The faculty and students together are creating new knowledge and pushing the frontiers in these areas. Both the research and educational opportunities in our department are greatly enhanced by the outstanding college of engineering and university of which we are a part. Interdisciplinary research and courses are common here, offering access to leading scientists and educators in micro-devices, life sciences, advanced materials, opto-electronic devices, etc. We also have a top-ten medical school, and top-ten departments of engineering, including biomedical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and others.

Our students have full access to the University's rich infrastructure and culture. In addition, we are situated in Ann Arbor, the town everyone loves. It combines a cosmopolitan cultural life with the minimal congestion and sensible cost of living of the midwest. If you are a sports fan or a music enthusiast, you have the opportunity as a student to purchase affordable tickets to the many athletic events and concerts that take place on campus every week. There is the attraction of one of the nation's very best music schools, located right on the engineering campus, with numerous concerts, recitals and other events. There are many theaters, and every summer the famous Art Festival, which brings in artists and musicians from around the country. There is also an amazing diversity of restaurants of seemingly every nationality, offering everything from the exotic to the conventional, from pricey to modest.

We welcome your visit to our campus and department, either in person or via the web.
