Engineering 100 in the News

Engineering students construct greenhouses for public schools
The Michigan Daily
More than 100 engineering students have started building the first sides of the greenhouses that will be placed at five nearby, underprivileged public schools next semester.

Introductory engineering class hits on formula to attract women
University Record
Educators have fretted for years about ways to attract more women to science and math majors, and a new section of a U-M course may have hit on a simple solution: Add a service component to the technical coursework.

Engineering 100 Home

Engineering 100 prepares students for their future careers by giving them practice in the overall work experience of professional engineers. This includes:

  • technical problem solving and engineering design
  • preparation of written technical reports and oral presentations including mixed audience analysis
  • team management
  • ethical decision-making

Indeed, a strength of Engineering 100 is that it integrates these skills together in one global experience for the students, much as their future careers at UM and beyond will demand.

There are several sections of Engineering 100, each based on a different field of engineering. First-year students select a section that interests them, and is the basis around which their first-year schedules are arranged.

Click on the links in the menu to the left to see information about the different sections. (Some sections, notably the new ones, do not yet have a photo gallery or video of student presentations.)
