Technology Transfer and Commercialization
In the course of conducting research, Michigan Engineering faculty are continually generating ideas and 'intellectual property' that could provide the foundation for new or improved commercial products and services. The College's office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization was created to facilitate the transfer of these ideas from academia to the corporate sector in order to, ultimately, benefit society.
The benefits to your organization
The transfer of technology to your organization may shorten development time and lead to a product or service that increases your competitive advantage. Technology transfer can occur through:
- Education and Publication
The simplest transfer of technology occurs in the classroom. Our faculty freely share their ideas to ensure that Michigan Engineers take that knowledge out into the work world. They also publish their research results in professional journals and report on their findings at conferences. - Consulting
Companies can actively solicit transfer by employing U-M professors to serve as expert consultants on proprietary research and development projects. - Sponsored Research
Often, a consortium of companies in a particular industry will provide financial support for one of the College's research entities. At present, research centers focused on aerospace, automotive, biomedical, computer science, the environment, ergonomics, manufacturing, polymers and porous materials, and microelectromechanical systems are seeking business partners. - Technology Licensing
The College uses patents to protect and assist in the commercialization of its intellectual property. This property may then be licensed by organizations outside the University to help them develop new products or services. - Start-Up Companies
Start-ups represent another avenue for organizations to invest in the College. Take a moment to review our resources for industry or read some recent success stories.
