Funding for PhD Students

U-M covers tuition, stipend and health insurance for all Engineering PhDs

All PhD students in the U-M College of Engineering are guaranteed full funding, provided they continue to meet all the milestones on the path to their doctorate. The package includes:

  • Tuition and fees
  • University Health Insurance
  • Monthly living stipend

Exact funding amounts vary by department, and students coming from a master’s program typically receive 4 years of funding. Students coming directly from a bachelor’s program receive 5 years of funding. The package can come from a combination of sources, including:

  • U-M, College of Engineering or Rackham Graduate School fellowships
  • Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) appointments
  • Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) positions
  • External fellowships

Funding for Master’s Students

There’s no guaranteed funding package for master’s students. Check with your department to learn more about any fellowships, GSI positions or GSRA positions open to master’s students.

The College also maintains a list of fellowships and other funding relevant to engineering students. Downloadable funding spreadsheet (.xlsx ) (as of 5-26-17)

Bridge to the Doctorate Program

Two terms of funding for the first academic year (i.e. tuition, living stipend, health insurance and fees). Admitted master’s students are automatically considered for this award based on the information in their official admission applications.
