About this video

Michigan Engineering is pioneering an Internet system that enables researchers to interconnect and test physical and virtual prototypes, in real time, no matter where in the world those prototypes might be. The challenge is to ensure a high-fidelity simulation despite the presence of Internet delays. This system could make it possible for researchers to test an entire multi-component system (like a car) no matter where in the world those components might be. This improves current system prototyping technology that’s limited to bench-testing interconnected components, or testing a system in which components are interconnected locally.

Photo: Joseph Xu, Michigan Engineering Communications & Marketing Tulga Ersal is an assistant research scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and at the Automotive Research Center at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. His work delves into system dynamics and control, mathematical modeling, model reduction, multi-body dynamics, networked hardware-in-the-loop simulation, and biomechanics. The application areas of this work include vehicle dynamics, vehicle powertrains, energy systems, driver modeling, and human stance and balance.
