PhD student's colorful 'hedgehogs' take top prize4/26/2013
Technicolor "hedgehogs" took the top prize in the Materials Research Society's Science as Art competition. Joong Hwan Bahng, a PhD student in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering under Nicholas Kotov, created the spiky spheres by growing bristles of zinc oxide on nanoparticles. Zinc oxide is known for its catalytic and water purification applications, and the new configuration may help the nanoparticles mix into solutions or produce interesting particle-particle or particle-cell interactions. Neon and pastel colors, added by Bahng, light up the the electron microscope image.
