Isabel Cosnahan, Chemical Engineering BSE Student, reads the measurement of water level to calculate the flow of water through the calibration of a water rotameter in a ChE 360 lab in the HH Dow Building on March 21, 2013.ChE 360 is a lab that consists of a variety of equipment used to illustrate many of the chemical engineering principles students study (thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, fluid flow, and so forth) and the uncertainties that affect the result of any calculation that uses that measurement.

Through our chemical engineering program students develop problem-solving skills and a strong base of engineering, science and mathematics. They learn to design and conduct experiments and interpret the outcomes. The program focuses on critical-thinking, preparing our graduates to identify and develop solutions for engineering challenges in the field. Students with a passion for chemistry and talent in math and problem solving typically do well in chemical engineering.

Chemical engineering students at U-M have the opportunity to customize their academic experience through a variety of programs. Many students choose minors such as the International minor, Interdisciplinary Design, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Engineering. Others pursue dual degrees, combining chemical engineering with other engineering disciplines such as Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering or degrees from the College of Literature, Science & Arts, such as Chemistry. Because of U-M's strength across its many schools and colleges, students can take advantage of a cross-disciplinary education of unparalleled excellence.

With additional opportunities for laboratory research, experience in industry and the ability to combine a Master's degree with the Bachelor's degree program, we expect our students to leave with an edge whether they seek employment or additional education.

Because our Chemical Engineering Bachelor of Science in Engineering program is ABET accredited, graduates are eligible for professional engineering licenses. Students who decide to become licensed can begin process during their senior year. Through ABET accreditation and international accords, U-M chemical engineering degrees are recognized around the US and around the world.


Candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Chemical Engineering must complete the program described in the appropriate sample schedule, found under degree requirements. The examples lead to graduation in eight terms. Students may take courses outside U-M to fulfill these requirements but must complete 50 credits at U-M Ann Arbor, including 30 technical credits at the 300-level or higher. Students may not take more than 3 ChE core courses outside U-M Ann Arbor.

Transfer students: Transfer students typically require 5 full terms, or two and a half years at the University of Michigan to complete the chemical engineering program requirements. For details, please contact the program advisor, Dr. Montgomery.
