Software at CAEN
- CAEN manages an extensive library of software for the College of Engineering.
- The CAEN Lab Software Environment is the computing environment that provides access to most software, and is available in all CAEN computer labs.
- Most software installations and upgrades occur in the summer, when changes can be integrated into the lab environment with the lowest impact on students.
- Engineering faculty who require software to be installed in CAEN labs for their course should submit a course software request.
- Options are also available for Engineering departments to obtain licensed software.
It is CAEN's mission to support the most efficient and effective use of software in CAEN computer labs, and improve the quality of teaching and education within the College of Engineering. CAEN is available to assist Engineering faculty interested in exploring how software can be integrated into courses. CAEN staff members work with faculty to research various software sources, find solutions that address course needs, and oversee software installation and implementation into the CAEN Lab Software Environment.
CAEN Lab Software Environment
The CAEN Lab Software Environment (CLSE) is the desktop computing environment installed in CAEN computer labs. It is also available via remote lab login services. The CLSE is designed to provide a standardized computing environment to support the academic needs of College of Engineering students. The software available in the CLSE is primarily engineering-oriented, with a strong emphasis on high-level mathematical analysis, computer-aided design/engineering (CAD/CAE), and advanced programming tasks. In order to maintain stability, security, and a standard configuration across CAEN computer labs, users may only create or modify files locally in temporary locations, but convenient access to individual online file storage is available. The CLSE is updated each summer in preparation for the following Fall term.
Selecting an Operating System
All CAEN lab computers are "dual-boot." You may use either Microsoft Windows or Red Hat Linux by rebooting and selecting the desired OS. To reboot from the Windows login screen, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and click OK to accept the CAEN Conditions of Use. Click the red arrow in the lower-right corner of the screen, then select Restart. To reboot from the Linux login screen, select Restart from the list of options in the lower-left corner of the screen.

As the computer reboots, you will be presented with a black and white screen that shows your operating system options. Press the up/down arrow keys to highlight your choice, then press the Enter key.
