Overview of Printing at CAEN
CAEN provides black & white printing services in its computer labs, located in College of Engineering (CoE) buildings, at no direct charge to CoE students. Color printing services are also available in select labs. Page allocations are enforced on all printers each semester using funds deposited into special Blue Bucks accounts (semesters are based on the academic calendar from the first day of class through the last day of exams). Based on usage statistics, the allocation of funds is calculated to cover the printing needs for most students and ensure that printing resources are used effectively.
Printing is a valuable resource for the course work and research of CoE students. CAEN strives to provide students with the best computing services at U-M.
What to know for 2009-2010
- CoE students & faculty receive a $60.00 allocation for printing in CAEN labs.
- Black & white costs $0.03/page; color costs $0.12/page (per printed side).
- So, you may print up to 2000 black & white pages for free; color pages count as 4 black & white pages.
- Students may print above their page allocation by paying via Blue Bucks.
- Xerox black & white printers (-blue queues) are available in all CAEN labs.
- Several labs also offer Xerox color printing services (-maize queues).
- Color printers will default to print in black & white when used from CAEN lab computers. Individuals are only charged for color pages if the option to print their document in color is selected. Even then, they will only be charged the color rate for the pages in their document that contain color text or images.
- Color printers will default to print in color when used via the CAEN web printing service. Individuals will need to manually select the Black & White option on the printer's web page if they do not wish to be charged the color rate for the pages in the document that contain color.
- CAEN lab printers only offer standard "letter" size paper (8½ in × 11 in).
Printing in CAEN Computer Labs
The Xerox printers located in CAEN computer labs on North Campus are owned and operated by CAEN. All enrolled CoE students receive an allocation each semester, via an Blue Bucks account, which they may use to purchase pages on both CAEN's black & white (-blue queues), and color (-maize queues), Xerox printers.
In computer labs that contain color printers, the color printers are the default queue to which all print jobs are submitted. However, it should be noted that lab users are not charged the rate for color pages unless that option is specifically selected at the time the job is submitted. In addition, even when the color option is selected, users will only be charged the color rate for the pages that actually contain color text or images. For more information on the different printing costs, please see our printing allocation page.
Note: CAEN printers are a community resource, so please treat them as such and be courteous to others who use them:
- Do not print multiple copies of any single document. Split up large or complex jobs into smaller sections (e.g. <25 pages) to allow others equal access to the printers.
- Do not manually feed your own paper in any CAEN lab printer (especially transparencies) as this may damage the printer and limit access to others.
For problems with CAEN printers, or questions about your CAEN lab page allocation, contact the CAEN Hotline.
Printing at ITCS Sites & The Duderstadt Center
All U-M students receive a Basic Computing Package (BCP) each semester from ITCS to cover black & white printing services in ITCS computing sites. These sites includes the Duderstadt Center, Shapiro Undergraduate Library (UGLi) and Ross Academic Center, which have CAEN computers. The printers in these locations are owned and operated by ITCS, and pages printed in these sites are deducted from the BCP allocation.
ITCS also provides some color printing services on campus; all color printers located in the Duderstadt Center are owned and operated by ITCS Sites. Each page printed on ITCS color printers will result in a charge to a student's account; no color printing services are included in the BCP. For more information about ITCS printing, or to report a problem regarding an ITCS printer, contact ITCS Sites for assistance.
