Guest Wi-Fi Network Service is Available on Campus

Bookmark and Share

MGuest, the unauthenticated Wi-Fi network service for campus guests and visitors, is now available. The new guest Wi-Fi service network name (SSID) is "MGuest" in locations that provide the authenticated "MWireless" wireless network, and "MGuest-CAEN" in locations that provide the authenticated "CAEN" wireless network.

Both MGuest and MGuest-CAEN offer the same level of service, and are accessible by entering an email address on a webpage. Sponsored accounts are no longer needed to provide wireless network access for guests.

There are some differences between the unauthenticated Wi-Fi network guest services, MGuest and MGuest-CAEN, and the authenticated Wi-Fi network services, MWireless and CAEN:

  • MGuest and MGuest-CAEN traffic will not be encrypted at the network level. MWireless and CAEN wireless networks encrypt all traffic.
  • MGuest and MGuest-CAEN allow access to a limited number of ports and protocols compared to the MWireless and CAEN wireless networks.
  • MGuest and MGuest-CAEN are bandwidth limited to 1 Mb/s downstream and 384 Kb/s upstream. The MWireless and CAEN wireless networks do not artificially limit connections.
  • MGuest and MGuest-CAEN are treated like an off-campus network. This makes U-M network resources that are limited to U-M network addresses unavailable.

Anyone is able to use the MGuest and MGuest-CAEN networks, but those with valid U-M uniqnames are encouraged to continue to use the MWireless or CAEN wireless networks.
