Important changes to the Windows environment in CAEN computer labs
All computers located in CAEN computer labs and the Duderstadt Center are being updated to 64-bit Microsoft Windows 7 for the Fall 2010 term. With this update comes several other changes to the environment that may affect how you use CAEN Windows computers.
You must have changed your Kerberos password since April 2006
When you log into CAEN Windows computers, you must use your UMICH.EDU Kerberos password. Due to the Windows 7 upgrade, in order for your password to work correctly, the password database itself must contain an "AES hash" of your password. Passwords that have been set or changed since April 2006 will have had the AES hash generated automatically. This means passwords that have not been changed since April 2006 must now be changed in order to log into CAEN Windows 7 computers.
If you have not changed your password since April 2006, visit the following page:
Roaming profiles and application data will be reset
In the previous Microsoft Windows Vista lab environment, roaming profiles and application data were stored in an individual's CAEN online file storage at N:\profiles\lab2009. For the Windows 7 environment, this location will change to N:\profiles\EAD2010. This means that any configuration changes you have made to your profile in Windows Vista (e.g. desktop background, application settings, Start menu shortcuts) will be reset, however, the data will remain available to you in the N:\profiles\lab2009 folder.
SSH software changes
Due to the need for heightened security, the SSH Secure Shell client from ssh.com is no longer available on CAEN's Microsoft Windows computers. Instead, the PuTTY (SSH) and WinSCP (SFTP & SCP) applications are available as alternatives.
Tokens for the engin.umich.edu AFS cell are no longer obtained
CAEN has not issued engin.umich.edu AFS home directories to CAEN account holders since Winter 2006, in favor of using existing ITS (umich.edu) IFS. As usage of engin.umich.edu AFS has decreased, so has the need to include the functionality of obtaining engin.umich.edu AFS tokens on CAEN Windows computers.
Beginning in the Fall 2010, CAEN Windows computers will no longer automatically obtain engin.umich.edu AFS tokens upon login, and the R: network drive will no longer provide an option to access the engin.umich.edu AFS cell.
Users who wish to access files in the engin.umich.edu AFS cell may use the WinSCP application.
