CAEN Introduces Wireless Web Authorization
CAEN is pleased to announce the availability of a new alternative to the current VPN for wireless. The new web-based authentication system for the CAEN wireless network allows all members of the U-M community to access the CAEN wireless network using their CoE/CAEN (engin.umich.edu) or UMCE (umich.edu) Kerberos passwords on a secure web page.
This new service not only provides easy access to general Internet services, but also addresses some of the issues users have encountered with VPN-only access. Users with handheld devices (PDAs), such as Palms and Pocket PCs, can now access the CAEN wireless network. Users with older and/or open source operating systems that do not support the Cisco VPN client can now also have wireless access. In addition, visitors and guests of the University can access the network without having to install the Cisco VPN client.
There are, however, some limitations involved when the web-based authentication system when used to obtain a wireless connection. The web-based method only provides secure authentication, not session encryption. Therefore it is not as secure as a VPN connection. In addition, due to security limitations, only a limited number of applications will be allowed to access the network including web (http/https), Secure Shell (ssh), and secure email clients. Guests and visitors can receive a special temporary guest account that will allow them full, unrestricted access to the Internet using this web based authentication method.
Those who require access to network resources beyond what is offered via the web-based authentication system can continue to use the Cisco VPN client. In general, CAEN strongly recommends that users use the VPN whenever possible because it provides complete session encryption. The recent changes to the wireless network require a new VPN configuration file that can be downloaded from the CAEN Wireless site at www.engin.umich.edu/caen/network/wireless. Note: You will not be required to log in to the new web-based system in order to use the VPN.
CAEN continues to look for ways to improve the usability of wireless computing on North Campus while still providing a secure environment. Up-to- date information can be found on the CAEN wireless site at www.engin.umich.edu/caen/network/wireless. For help with using the new web-based authentication system or with installing the Cisco VPN client, please visit or call the CAEN Hotline in the Duderstadt Center, 734-764-CAEN. CAEN also welcomes your comments and suggestions. To send feedback, email caen@umich.edu.
