Solaris to be phased out at CAEN

Over the past two years, there has been a steady movement away from Solaris workstations in the CAEN computing labs and the Duderstadt Center. This is due to a variety of factors including declining usage, limited resources, and an increase in the number of Engineering programs available for Windows and Linux.

During the spring/summer 2006 term, CAEN will be retiring all Solaris workstations in the Duderstadt Center, and IOE CAEN computing labs.  This will leave EECS 4327 as the only CAEN lab with Solaris workstations. CAEN plans on retiring these remaining Solaris workstations beginning spring/summer 2007.

CAEN believes nearly all teaching requirements that are based upon Solaris today can be satisfied on Windows or Linux.  Our staff is ready to work with College of Engineering faculty that require help in transitioning their course-related software needs to these other operating systems.

Owners of Sun hardware receiving CAEN updates and support will individually be sent more detailed communication from CAEN regarding their existing Solaris workstations and servers.

If you require further assistance in transitioning away from Solaris, please contact Amadi Nwankpa, amadi@umich.edu.
