New CSE CAEN labs open

Two new CAEN labs opened in the new Computer Science and Engineering Building on North Campus. The new 104,000 gross square foot building is a state-of-the-art instructional and academic facility to support computer science, information technology and related activities, and student learning spaces at the College of Engineering.

The new facility houses the College of Engineering’s computer science and engineering faculty, as well as accompanying technical and support staff. The facility is four floors, plus a penthouse for mechanical equipment and consists of approximately 60,000 net square feet of space housing offices, research labs, instructional and common space.

Intel Laboratory (CSE 1695) is approximately 2000 square feet and is conveniently located adjacent to the main atrium. Two, all glass, exterior walls offer spectacular views of the North Campus Diag. 55 Intel based computers, with 19" LCD monitors will be installed on tables that can be freestanding, mobile, or have the ability to connect or snap together. They have wire management or a modesty panel and include modular power and data for quick set up or reconfiguration. Each table has surface mounted power for laptop use. There are also a half dozen mobile lounge "conferencing" chairs with tablet arms for casual computing.

The lab is set up to have a lounge-like feel but there is a retractable partition to set up a portion of the room for teaching. A mobile, large display will be used to accommodate projection when the need exists.

Mellor Family Laboratory (CSE 1620) is approximately 1350 feet and is conveniently located near the connector to the Dow Building. 44 Intel based computers, with 19" LCD monitors will soon be installed on tables that can be freestanding, mobile, or have the ability to connect or snap together. They have wire management or a modesty panel and include modular power and data for quick set up or reconfiguration. Each table has surface mounted power for laptop use. Corner surfaces are stored but available to reconfigure half the space into a collaborative (teaming) learning space.

This lab is set-up for teaching with a retractable partition dividing the room into two equal spaces. The room has a ceiling mounted projector and Crestron Automation.

More information about these labs is available on the lab section of the CAEN web site at www.engin.umich.edu/caen/wls/labs.
