On August 19th, email forwarding on CAEN systems was updated to be integrated more closely with the UM Online Directory (UMOD). Now, email addressed to uniqname@engin.umich.edu is forwarded to umich.edu for delivery to the location specified by the Email Forwarding Address of the recipient's UMOD entry. This allows CAEN email users to change the delivery location for both their CoE and other campus email simply by modifying their UMOD entry.

As a result of this change, UMOD entries that contain uniqname@engin.umich.edu in the Email Forwarding Address field will no longer work because that email would be sent back to umich.edu by the engin.umich.edu mail servers. This email routing loop would then be detected and the email returned to the sender. Instead, to direct your email to any of the CAEN email servers, the Email Forwarding Address field in your UMOD entry must be set to point directly at the email server on which you access your email. For most CAEN email users, that server is mail.engin.umich.edu. For faculty and staff who read their email using Exchange, the server is adsroot.itcs.umich.edu.

CAEN has already modified this field in UMOD entries for the CAEN email users affected by this change, so no further action is required to continue to receive email as usual. However, CAEN email users wishing to modify this field in their UMOD entries in the future to refer to a CAEN mail server should be sure to set it to uniqname@ server, where server is one of the CAEN email servers listed above as appropriate.
