What you need to know about using your laptop on the College network

If you are one of the many students, faculty or staff who bring a laptop to campus, there are several useful services offered by CAEN to help you improve your experience.

To take advantage of the expanding wireless network on North Campus, you will need a wireless card for your laptop. These are available for purchase at the UM Computer Showcase, located in the basement of the Michigan Union, and at most computer stores. Complete instructions on how to download the necessary VPN client software and get started can be found on the CAEN web site at http://www.engin.umich.edu/caen/network/wireless/.

The Media Union also offers public ethernet wall jacks. For more information about mobile computing, take a look at: http://www.engin.umich.edu/caen/network/ethernet.html

If you want to access UNIX applications from your Windows laptop, you might want to consider purchasing the Exceed application at the UM Computer Showcase. For more information, visit: http://www.engin.umich.edu/caen/connect/x11.html

To print to an ITCS printer in the Media Union, you first need to authenticate to the UMICH.EDU domain. Pages that you print will then be deducted from your ITCS Basic Computing Package (BCP)..

If you need assistance, help is right around the corner. CAEN Hotline consultants are available by phone (764-CAEN), walk-in, and online via Contact CAEN at http://www.engin.umich.edu/caen/contact-caen/.
