CAEN continues plans to retire HP-UX
Since the early 1990’s CAEN has supported Hewlett-Packard’s HP-UX operating systems in the CAEN labs and departments. During the past four years, there has been a steady movement away from HP-UX machines in the CAEN labs, due to a variety of factors including declining usage.
Starting in Summer 2003, CAEN will be retiring the last of the HP-UX workstations in the CAEN labs. There are not enough resources within CAEN to integrate new HP-UX releases and still support Solaris, Windows, and Linux.
We believe all teaching requirements based upon HP-UX can be satisfied today on Solaris, Linux, or Windows. Our staff is ready to work with faculty that need help in transitioning their course-related needs to these other operating systems. If you require assistance in this area, contact Amadi Nwankpa (amadi@umich.edu).
For researchers with CAEN support contracts to maintain existing departmental HP-UX workstations, CAEN will continue to provide patch updates, access to existing software, and backups according to the following schedule:
- HP-UX 10.20 through Dec. 2003
- HP-UX 11.0 through April 2004
- HP-UX 11i through June 2005
CAEN will contact owners of HP-UX 10.20 and HP-UX 11.0 workstations to discuss upgrading to HP-UX 11i. CAEN is no longer accepting orders for any new installations of HP-UX. Additional information can be found on the CAEN web site at http://www.engin.umich.edu/caen/departmental/coe.
