Releases Quick Access
VPN for Home Use Available
CAEN now provides a remote access VPN (Virtual Private Network) service to all U-M faculty and staff. The VPN service provides a secure way to connect to the U-M network from off-campus and obtain access to campus resources.
The VPN service has three main benefits which help make connecting to U-M easier and safer. First, VPN provides an encrypted connection between the computer and the CAEN network allowing secured transmission of data to the start of U-M networks. Second, once the connection is established, the VPN is immune to Broadband provider (Cable and DSL) port blocking of Windows ports so that file sharing, Exchange, and other College Windows services continue to work. Lastly, the VPN furnishes a U-M IP address similar to the way that one is obtained through an ISDN or dial-in connection. This allows staff to access resources that are restricted to U-M IP address from off-campus.
The VPN is based on the same security model used for CAEN Wireless. If you already have the Cisco VPN client installed on your computer, you only need to install an additional profile that will give you access from off campus. All of the CoE department computer support staff can offer assistance with installing and using the VPN. The CAEN Hotline, located in the Duderstadt Center, is available to assist with installation issues. For more information, refer to the CAEN web site at www.engin.umich.edu/caen/connect/vpn.html.
