The CAEN Computing Grid is now available for general use. The Grid is based on the open source Sun Grid Engine (SGE) software and uses CAEN lab computers as Grid nodes. The CAEN Grid is configured to allow user-submitted background jobs to run on idle lab computers while no one is logged into the console.
CAEN encourages the use of the Grid over ad hoc or manual job-spawning techniques. For details about the CAEN Computing Grid, including FAQs and usage examples, visit www.engin.umich.edu/caen/grid. Grid Computing Arrives
- Over 250 Sun lab computers are now in the Grid; CAEN is looking into adding its Linux lab computers to the Grid in the near future. Both graphical and UNIX command-line interfaces exist.
- Iterations of a particular job can be submitted to the Grid with a command line or GUI interface.
- Although there is no practical limit to the number of jobs a user can submit, the Grid is set to throttle execution of simultaneous jobs at 30 per user.
- The Grid will not start jobs on computers where a user is logged into the console.
- If a user logs into the console of a computer that is currently running a Grid job, the job will be suspended automatically until the user logs out.
- The rmproc command should not remove Grid jobs.
CAEN encourages the use of the Grid over ad hoc or manual job-spawning techniques. For details about the CAEN Computing Grid, including FAQs and usage examples, visit www.engin.umich.edu/caen/grid.
