Exchange offers integrated email, calendars, and task lists
The CAEN email environment is composed of two separate email services: the basic email service on CAEN's email server (srvr5), and the Exchange email service on CAENs Microsoft Exchange server. The basic email service provided on srvr5 is available to all students, faculty and staff of the College of Engineering. CAEN provides Microsoft Exchange email service to the faculty and staff and temporary employees of the CoE. Not only can an Exchange account be used for email, it can also be used for scheduling meetings on its calendar, providing public folder access, and the creation of task and contact lists. These services can be used independently of the Exchange email service through the Microsoft Outlook client on PCs. Exchange also offers an email client for the web, as well as anti-virus support. Exchange account holders can elect to have their email delivered to srvr5 or ITCS email servers instead, and still make full use of the other valuable features of Exchange.
Calendars
An integral part of Microsoft Outlook and Exchange is the calendar. Any person with an Exchange account can use all the features including meeting scheduling, automatic meeting reminders and calendar sharing. Meetings may be proposed to other Exchange members via the calendar. Once accepted, the meeting will appear automatically on the calendar of each attendee.
Calendar sharing is a powerful feature of Exchange. Permissions lists can be created, allowing different people the ability to view, modify or add appointments at the owner's discretion. In addition, calendars can be kept private. If a public calendar is desired to track public events, meetings, or important dates, a public folder can be created by CAEN.
Task lists
Task lists can be created and shared amongst Exchange account holders to keep track of upcoming and current tasks. Task assignments can be sent via email at the time the task is created, and automatic reminders of tasks can be sent. A task list may be restricted to as many or as few people as desired.
Public folders
Public folders are a convenient way of sharing information amongst a group of Exchange account holders. Public folders can take the form of a mailbox, a calendar, a task list, or a list of contacts. Requesting an Exchange Account Faculty and staff Exchange accounts are issued at the CAEN Hotline. We request that you please bring your Mcard. If you are a temporary employee, you will also need to submit a memo from your supervisor on your behalf requesting an Exchange account.
